really.

So that mock grant I was griping about in November? I finally got it back. To refresh, the assignment was for us to write a 5-page grant proposal on a topic assigned to us that has nothing to do with our research. One would think that after putting in weeks worth of work (reading the literature, drafting specific aims, actually writing the document) we would get gobs of feedback that would be useful since we will be repeating the process this summer for our qualifying exams...

On the hard copy of my grant that was handed back (graded by the PI whose field I was assigned), the following was written, on the right margin of the first page underneath my grade (A): "Good job - it's hard to write a grant proposal when you've never been given instructions for paper formatting, etc. You made a good attempt, and proposed reasonable experiments that could lead to interesting results that advance the field." And that's it. Not one other pen stroke on the rest of the document. Instead of, oh I don't know, commenting on the correct grant format or telling me which proposed experiments were best/worst, I got a PI who preferred to criticize the format of the class.

It just makes me mad because I did put a good amount of effort into it, and I know it's not great. It would have been very helpful to get a professional opinion on how to make it better.

Oh well.
