In January 2008, I was not looking forward to the cancer section of bioregulation (first year course). As with every section of that class, though, I got through it with minimal damage to my ego.
In January 2009, I am not looking forward to my current course load. I have two classes left in my graduate career (a cancer & development course and a seminar-based course). In each, we are assigned to give one presentation. With both course directors assigning presentation dates alphabetically, I'm forced to give both on the same day (02/20/09). I could probably have one of them changed, because it is going to suck to prepare for both simultaneously; but I would honestly rather just get them over with.
In January 2008, I was excited about going to the Maryville/Knoxville indoor soccer tournament with fellow UTC alumni.
In January 2009, there are plans to revisit this tournament and get our annual reunion. I'm stoked.
In a recent chat with my boss, he was kind enough to remind me of the horrible year I have ahead of me. In addition to finishing my last semester of classes, I have to essentially reformat and rewrite this paper that should already be published, take and pass my qualifying exam, and then write a predoctoral grant.
So while each year I'm sure I'll find something to whine about in January, I think the next 11.5 months will be very challenging.
"An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves." (Bill Vaughn)
